In 1980, Vajpayee helped to found the BJP. He served as the party's president from 1980 to 1986 and from 1993 to 1996. Under Vajpayee's leadership, the BJP emerged as a major force in Indian politics.

In 1998, the BJP-led NDA won the general election and Vajpayee became the Prime Minister of India. He served as Prime Minister for six years, from 1998 to 2004.
