Neil Gaiman's American Gods is a novel that explores the clash between old and new gods in America. The book follows the journey of Shadow Moon, a recently released convict, as he travels across the country with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. Along the way, they encounter a cast of characters who represent different aspects of American culture and mythology.

The novel has been praised for its rich characters, its exploration of American identity, and its beautiful writing. It has also been adapted into a successful television series. In 2019, I had the opportunity to visit some of the places that inspired Gaiman's novel. Here are some of my notes from the road:

Joliet, Illinois

Joliet is the setting for the novel's opening scene. Shadow Moon is released from prison here, and he begins his journey with Mr. Wednesday. The city is a gritty, industrial town, and it's easy to see how it could have inspired Gaiman's vision of a world where the old gods are dying.

Cairo, Illinois

Cairo is a small town located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. It's a place that's been forgotten by time, and it's easy to imagine that it could be a haven for the old gods. In the novel, Cairo is the setting for a pivotal scene in which Shadow Moon confronts his own mortality.

House on the Rock, Wisconsin

The House on the Rock is a bizarre and wonderful museum located in Spring Green, Wisconsin. It's filled with strange and eclectic collections, including a carousel of carousel animals, a music machine that plays itself, and a giant whale. The House on the Rock is said to have inspired Gaiman's description of the House on the Rock in the novel.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

The Badlands National Park is a vast and desolate landscape located in South Dakota. It's a place where the forces of nature have eroded the land into strange and beautiful formations. The Badlands is said to have inspired Gaiman's description of the Badlands in the novel.

Black Hills, South Dakota

The Black Hills are a mountain range located in South Dakota. They're home to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and a number of other historical and cultural sites. The Black Hills are said to have inspired Gaiman's description of the Black Hills in the novel.

Rapid City, South Dakota

Rapid City is the largest city in South Dakota. It's a modern and vibrant city, but it's also home to a number of historical and cultural sites. Rapid City is said to have inspired Gaiman's description of Rapid City in the novel.

Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota

Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful and rugged canyon located in South Dakota. It's a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and camping. Spearfish Canyon is said to have inspired Gaiman's description of Spearfish Canyon in the novel.

Deadwood, South Dakota

Deadwood is a historic gold mining town located in South Dakota. It's a town that's steeped in history, and it's easy to imagine that it could have inspired Gaiman's vision of a world where the old gods are dying.

My journey through the Lands of American Gods was an unforgettable experience. I visited some of the most beautiful and fascinating places in America, and I learned a lot about the country's history and culture. I also gained a new appreciation for Neil Gaiman's novel, and I can't wait to read it again.
