The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has a long and storied history of investigating and prosecuting public corruption. From its early days investigating Teapot Dome to its more recent work on high-profile cases involving elected officials and government contractors, the FBI has played a vital role in protecting the integrity of American government.

Teapot Dome

One of the FBI's earliest high-profile public corruption cases was the Teapot Dome scandal. In the early 1920s, Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall leased two U.S. naval oil reserves, Teapot Dome and Elk Hills, to private oil companies without competitive bidding. The leases were later found to have been corrupt, and Fall was convicted of bribery and conspiracy.

The Teapot Dome scandal was a major embarrassment for the Harding administration, and it led to the resignation of Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty. It also helped to solidify the FBI's reputation as a non-partisan law enforcement agency that was not afraid to investigate high-level corruption.

Recent Public Corruption Cases

In recent years, the FBI has continued to investigate and prosecute high-profile public corruption cases. Some of the most notable cases include:

  • The investigation of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of corruption in 2011.
  • The investigation of former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who was convicted of corruption in 2015.
  • The investigation of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, who was convicted of corruption in 2014.
  • The investigation of former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who was indicted on corruption charges in 2015.

These cases demonstrate the FBI's commitment to investigating and prosecuting public corruption at all levels of government. The FBI's work in this area is essential to protecting the integrity of American government and ensuring that public officials are held accountable for their actions.

The FBI's Public Corruption Program

The FBI's Public Corruption Program is a comprehensive effort to investigate and prosecute public corruption. The program includes a variety of initiatives, including:

  • A task force dedicated to investigating public corruption in major cities
  • A training program for law enforcement officers on how to investigate public corruption
  • A public awareness campaign to educate the public about the dangers of public corruption
