Plot

The novel begins in 2019 with the discovery of a habitable planet, Rakhat, orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. A Jesuit mission is organized to make contact with the planet's inhabitants, the Runa. The mission is led by Father Emilio Sandoz, a brilliant linguist and theologian. Sandoz is accompanied by six other Jesuits: Lazlo Incandenza, a botanist; George Ignatieff, a physician; Anne O'Malley, a biologist; Jim Belasco, an engineer; and Robert Strattman, a historian.

The Jesuits arrive on Rakhat and are initially welcomed by the Runa. However, tensions soon develop between the two groups. The Jesuits are horrified by the Runa's practice of ritual suicide, and the Runa are offended by the Jesuits' attempts to convert them to Christianity.

The situation comes to a head when one of the Jesuits, Lazlo Incandenza, is killed by a Runa mob. The Jesuits are forced to flee Rakhat, and they return to Earth traumatized and disillusioned.

Characters

Father Emilio Sandoz is the leader of the Jesuit mission to Rakhat. He is a brilliant linguist and theologian, but he is also a deeply flawed and complex character. Sandoz is haunted by the death of his wife and child, and he is struggling to come to terms with his own faith.

George Ignatieff is a physician and another of the Jesuits who is killed on Rakhat. He is a pragmatic and skeptical man who is struggling to find meaning in his life.

Anne O'Malley is a biologist and the only woman on the Jesuit mission. She is a strong and independent woman who is determined to make her own mark on the world.

Jim Belasco is an engineer and another of the Jesuits who is killed on Rakhat. He is a quiet and unassuming man who is devoted to his faith.

Robert Strattman is a historian and the last of the Jesuits who is killed on Rakhat. He is a wise and experienced man who is haunted by the horrors of war.

Alien life is another major theme in the novel. The Jesuits' encounter with the Runa forces them to confront the possibility that life exists beyond Earth. The novel explores the challenges and opportunities that come with making contact with an alien species.

The limits of human understanding is a third major theme in the novel. The Jesuits are unable to fully understand the Runa, and they are ultimately forced to accept the limits of their own knowledge. The novel raises important questions about the limits of human reason and the importance of humility.
