Early Life and Musical Education

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Herbert began studying music at an early age. He was a gifted cellist and studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. In 1886, he moved to the United States, where he quickly established himself as a conductor and composer.

  • The Red Mill (1906)
  • Naughty Marietta (1910)

These operettas showcased Herbert's ability to create memorable tunes and complex harmonies that appealed to a wide audience.

Conducting and Composing for the Big Screen

In addition to his theatrical compositions, Herbert was also a renowned conductor. He led major orchestras in both the United States and Europe, performing works by classical composers as well as his own compositions.

As the motion picture industry emerged in the early 20th century, Herbert composed scores for several silent films. He created memorable music for The Birth of a Nation (1915) and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921),among others.

Personal Life and Legacy

Herbert was married to Therese Förster, an opera singer, in 1888. The couple had three children. Herbert was known for his exuberant lifestyle and his love of entertaining. He was a member of the Bohemian Club, a group of artists and writers in San Francisco.

Herbert died suddenly in 1924 at the age of 65. His legacy as a musical theater composer lives on through the popularity of his works, which continue to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
